Iraq's al-Qaida chief dead?

BAGHDAD - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the mastermind behind hundreds of bombings, kidnappings and beheadings whose leadership of the insurgent group al- Qaeda in Iraq made him the most wanted man in the country, was killed Wednesday evening by an air strike near Baqubah, north of Baghdad, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday.

The stated aim of the Jordanian-born Zarqawi, in addition to ousting U.S. and other forces from Iraq, was to foment bloody sectarian strife between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, a prospect that has become a grim reality over the past several months.

Zarqawi, a Sunni, was killed along with seven aides, officials said.

His killing is the most significant public triumph for the U.S.-led coalition since the 2003 capture of Saddam Hussein...

Jordanian-born terrorist mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is seen in these undated photos.

I certainly hope this announcement isn't premature. I'm also surprised that the Associated Press actually called him a "terrorist mastermind", instead of something wishy-washy like "insurgent leader".

The only thing better would be if we got Osama bin Laden.

Confirmed?

Some say seeing is believing; others that you should believe nothing you hear, and only half of what you see.

Anyway, who says no news is good news?! Call me callous, but this news is good...

I wondered if he wasn't spirited away and is held somewhere. Well better out of the picture. It was only a matter of time. Live by the sword die by the sword.

Long Live Our Troops!

Now he is getting his "just rewards," and it won't be including any afterlife "brothels" filled with virgins! May he ROT in hell for eternity, screaming for ice water and a cool breeze!

This can only be a good thing. Here's truly hoping it makes any difference!
Either way, nice work boys! As possum is fond of saying "some folks just need killin'" and this man seemed to fit the bill.

Even better days are ahead... The intel will play out for weeks to come...
You got to love live TV and a DVR... I heard on CNN International around three or four in the morning that he was the tribal leader of two Sunni tribes just above Badhdad... But never heard that when the CNN day shift took over... Guess they want to maintain the lie there was no real connection before the war and he was only there for medical treatment... Yeah Right...

I know this sounds gross, but it helps ease the grieving a bit... ND lost two more 21 year old National Guardsmen this week. (these two in Afghanistan.) Being such a small state population-wise, we take each loss very personally. I too feel a bit guilty celebrating the death of another being, but I can't bring myself to call him human!

He looks plenty dead to me. I hear he was drawing breath for a few minutes after the JDAM caved the house; just long enough to know who had killed his sorry butt, and reports say he tried to jump off the stretcher when he realized who was giving him that last look into his fading eyeballs.

I hope some intrepid trooper drew a pistol and shot him like a crippled horse.

Yogi Berra once said that if you don't go to your friend's funerals, nobody will come to yours. Maybe this is true of blog posting, too.

I'm here!
