Be prepared...
Words to live by...and the Boy Scout motto:
("This scout's name is Bob Hamilton and this picture was painted by Norman Rockwell in 1944.")
I was a Boy Scout in my youth, years ago.
(Once a Boy Scout, always a Boy Scout)
I made it to the rank of First Class; there's a lot of valuable training that comes along with doing that, not only for getting along outdoors, but also in life.
Anyway, February 8, 2010 is the centennial anniversary of The Boy Scouts of America. This is an excellent organization, and a much better alternative for an inner city kid (like I used to be) than hanging with a gang and/or on a street corner.
Here's to a hundred more years!

Hey Camo. I was a First Class scout too. Always be prepared.
(:D) Best regards...
Hey Camo, this comment box was the only way I knew how to sent you an e-mail. Your Red Ultra looks exactly like my 2007. I love your links.... and the Twin Towers memorial picture you have. Ride safe my brother, God Bless!
Both my boys were Scouts. So was my Dad.
I enjoyed Scouting very much. I made it to the rank of Life Scout (actually, one merit badge away from Eagle) before I decided I had outgrown it. I wish I had stuck around for Eagle Scout. I enjoyed camping and learning so much about the outdoors. I also helped work a day camp one summer on Detroit's Belle Isle (our troop was from the inner city as well). Many great memories. My kids had no such memories, as the area we live in, now is not so Scout friendly. I taught 'em plenty, though!
Troop 144!
I'm "Life for life", but still involved in Scouting, sort of. Advisor for a caving focused Venturing Crew (www.dragonbreathgrotto.org). 54 and still can't pull myself away from it.
Thanks for post this, JV.
Say I remember those days of yester year...and I continued to camp out during college as a member and president of the schools "Explorers Club."
New blog today by the way.

"Be prepared" is not just the Boy Scout motto, it's one of my personal ones too, along with "Attention to detail".

Cassandra:
Very good. Were you a Girl Scout?
Beerme:
Scouting is the best, I highly recommend it. I'm sorry to hear that your kids do not have the opportunity to experience it for themselves. I'm sure that you did teach them plenty.
Allen:
I knew you were a liaison to various Scout groups. Thank you for your dedicated service to a worthwhile cause.
Nick:
I continue to camp out to the present time...and I'm not planning to stop anytime soon. I might camp out sometime in the next week or so, since I am currently on the Big Island.
Island Girl TLA:
Most excellent. I hope that your encouragement keeps your son involved in Scouting.
Yes, I am on Facebook, look for Jack Vose.

Scouting was a great experience, huh?
I plan to have fun on my trip, thanks...
I was a Girl Scout for a couple of years, and I enjoyed it very much. That was a LONG time ago... ;-)

Dave:
I agree, the Boy Scouts are a great concept, teaching boys a number of valuable things...service among them. There's a lot to be said for self discipline as well.
